Hands-on preview!
01 Top plate
While the top plate offers a fairly standard mode dial on one side, the side bearing the shutter-release button also conceals an additional rear-facing dial and a small LCD. A further dial is found within the grip.
02 Lens mount
Nikon already revealed the model will sport a new lens mount as part of its pre-launch teaser campaign, and this measures 55mm in diameter.
03 Sensor
The sensor mirrors those inside some of Sony’s recent models in that it’s designed with a back-illuminated architecture, which helps it to gather light more effectively.
04 Body
As a model aimed at professional users, Nikon has used magnesium alloy in the body’s construction and has primed it with weather-seals.
05 24-70mm lens
24-70mm is a classic focal length for the pro user, so the fact that this is one of three optics to kick off the range shouldn’t be a surprise. The f/4 aperture also keeps it small and light.
06 5-axis VR
Sensor-based Vibration Reduction works across five axis, although this can also work in tandem with lens-based VR system inside F-mount lenses mounted via an adapter.
07 Snapbridge
Although the familiar Snapbridge technology has made the cut, it’s also possible to connect the camera through a simple Wi-fi connection – just as on pre-snapbridge models.
08 Ports
A USB (Type C) port features in the camera’s side, as does an HDMI out. In a move that will no doubt please videographers, there are also ports for headphones and a microphone.
09 Viewfinder
Not only does the electronic viewfinder boast a high 0.80x magnification, but its panel mirrors those inside rival bodies in offering 3.6 million dots for extra clarity.
10 LCD
The camera’s 3.2in LCD screen is nice and large, and this can be tilted up and down to suit the shooting situation. It also responds to touch, which is handy for AF point selection.
11 Memory card
The camera has a single memory card slot that accepts XQD media, although Nikon has stated that it will be compatible with cards based on the Cfexpress specification in the future.
12 Fn buttons
Two functions buttons, Fn1 and Fn2, are positioned on the front plate, just next to the lens mount, and these can be customized to access settings of the user’s choosing.
