Chris Rutter shows us that you don’t have to only use wide-angles for landscapes – master scenic shots with any lens!

Landscape photography is all about the best light, the right weather and stunning subject matter, but even when these all come together, you can still add drama, impact and depth by choosing the right lens for your Nikon. This doesn’t have to mean that you simply grab a wide-angle lens and try to capture as much of the landscape as possible. This may be a great way to capture the wider landscape, but the resulting images can often lack impact, as everything is very small in the frame.

To avoid this, you need to think about how to use different lenses to make the most of the stunning scenery that you encounter. So, whether you’re shooting seascapes or mountains, rivers or lowlands, over the following pages you’ll find the inspiration and information to help you transform your landscape shots into showstoppers.

We’ll start by investigating how you can get more from wide-angle lenses, from choosing the right focal length to the compositions you should use to make the most of these ultra-wide optics. Then you’ll discover some great ideas and techniques to help you get the best results from your standard zoom, specialized prime lenses and even telephoto and macro lenses. By using different viewpoints and focal lengths you can give your landscapes a whole new perspective. So, don’t get stuck in a rut, experiment with the lenses that you use to capture your scenic shots, and you’ll get images that will stand out from the crowd in no time at all.
