CONTAINER TIPS

-

• Seal the inside with Pot Seal or similar to retain moisture, but leave sufficient holes for drainage. A piece of broken pot over the holes will ensure they don’t clog up.

• Invest in good potting mix that contains a water spreader, 4-6 months of slow-release fertiliser and a good chunky grade of bark or peat.

• Water your plants well before planting. Mulch the top of your container with coco-fibre, stones or bark. Once planted, ensure you leave sufficient room (around 3-5cm) at the top for easy watering.

• Fertilise every three months with a slow-release fertiliser (I prefer NovaTec). Liquid feeding is beneficial to promote repetitive flowering.

• Over time, you may notice that it becomes more difficult to water adequately and your plants begin to fail. This happens when they have filled the pot with roots – water can no longer penetrate the middle areas. Sprinkle a handful of SaturAid and scuff it in a little. It will work its way throughout the pot and enable water to penetrate every level.

• Use a generous saucer under the container to give your plants some additional water when times are tough. Filling the saucer with fine gravel gives a tidier appearance.

• Deadheading is an enjoyable job and the key to longevity. Do it daily or weekly to keep your plants flowering constantly.
