STREAMLINED SHELVES

-

Joana Azevedo was fitting out her new Auckland home when she realised there was a lack of quality choices in modular shelving. She and Damon Jones, who together are New Zealand interior brand Zavedo, set out to design their own modular, simple but strong shelving unit. The challenge they set themselves was to hide all the screws. This was the beginning of Kin shelving, their latest furniture release.

THE SHELVES ARE: Powder-coated marinegrade alloy. There’s also a wood shelving option being prototyped. For us, customisation is key, we have many product extension ideas in the works at the moment.

OPEN SHELVING IS GREAT BECAUSE:

It can suit many rooms in the house. It also has the appearance of being airy and lighter. We wanted something that would sit off the floor, from a utility point of view, and be easy to clean and maintain. Dust won’t collect around the feet, for example.

IT’S STRONG: We’ve tested up to 120kg on one shelf without it breaking. It needed to be slimline but strong enough to hold a shelf of books without bending or dropping. SUSTAINABILITY IS IMPORTANT TO US: The longevity of a product is paramount and for us, sustainability starts right from when the product is being sketched and developed. Sustainability is about being timeless, but also in the packaging. We always ask ourselves whether something is recyclable and how we can use fewer materials.
