ROB REMKES 2010 CHEV CAMARO

-

Hey, Rob, your Camaro looks awesome! We’re guessing it didn’t always look like this? Nah, most of the work got done in the last six months. Before then, I’d just lowered it and had it on 22s — it looked a bit silly standard.

You’ve owned it for a while? Yeah, I’ve had it for more than four years.

Did you import it from overseas, or was it already in the country? I have got stuff in from overseas before, but I bought the Camaro out of Auckland. These cars are available in New Zealand at pretty reasonable prices, so it made sense to buy one locally.

Yours looks way cooler than your average latemodel Camaro, though. What made you go for those Work wheels? Well, the wheel offset on these cars made it hard to find something that fitted, which meant I’d have to go custom. I spotted these Work wheels on the internet, and ordered them through Cory at Firestone [ Tyres] Wainuiomata — he’s great! The wheels were custom built to suit the car and are 18x10.5 inches all around. Did the custom sizing mean you needed the fender flares? Yep. They’re Duraflex flares ordered off eBay. It was a bit of a hassle getting them here, because of their size, but we got there in the end. Pretty nerve-racking cutting the guards and drilling the mounting holes, but it looks awesome!

It also sits really nicely. Have you done something to the suspension? It’s on a set of BC Gold coilovers. They made a massive difference to the way the car drives — it felt a bit like a boat before. Going to the 18-inch wheels, I could fit a tyre with a bit more sidewall, so it also rides really well.

So, it’s a bit more of a driver’s car now? Yeah, I’ve got 4.11 diff gears in it now, and it’s got a Tremec TR-6060 six-speed with Hurst short shifter, so it’s pretty fun to drive.

We’re guessing that there’s a bit of work been done under the bonnet, too? Yeah, it’s got a massive cam in it — when I got it I said, “I don’t care how it drives as long as it sounds proper, so fit the biggest cam possible!” It also has a three-inch exhaust system, but it’s quite a weird system. With the single X-pipe, it sounded a bit raspy, so we fitted another X-pipe, and it sounds awesome — it’s got a proper rumble. I’ve owned a lot of old cars, and this one had to sound right.

What else have you owned? That depends on how much space you’ve got! I’ve had blown Monaros, four HT Monaros, a ’38 coupe, the list goes on …

Sounds as if you know your way around an old car, then. Was there any particular reason you chose a late-model vehicle this time around? I’m just a bit over old cars and fixing them all the time, I suppose. I can just hop in and drive this one.

So, you’re not going to be letting go of the Camaro any time soon? I’ve only just got it into shape — it’s not going anywhere soon!

Sounds good, Rob. Hope you don’t stop enjoying the Camaro!
