NZDRA RESULTS
The 49th New Zealand Nationals, hosted by NZDRA at Masterton Motorplex, saw records claimed and PBs tumble over the weekend of March 18 and 19. While PBs are always nice, what most competitive racers were after were national championship titles, most of which would be achieved at the event. Top Alcohol has been a battle of altered versus dragster this season, with Wairarapa local Dwane Garrett up against the altered of Taranaki’s Wayne Curry, Curry achieving the number-one sticker. Top Doorslammer has really been a onehorse race. Despite impressive times by Nigel Dixon, Mark Thomas in his Ford Customline is the new champ. Supercharged Outlaws was close all season, culminating in a fierce battle that saw Mark Gapp’s Willys coupe on the podium ahead of the Gerald Smith / Vanessa Lilly duo. The Super Stock battle has traversed the Tasman and been fierce at all rounds, but another great performance by Ryan Sheldon saw him rightfully claim the title ahead of Gavin Green. Grant and Adrian Rivers’ overnight enginechanging mission was worthwhile; they were crowned national champions of Competition, while Matt Gibbons’ consistency made his win in Super Sedan look easy. Modified and Super Street both had decent fields, the Ford Cammer–powered front-engine dragster (FED) of Alex Hogg proving reliable enough to take the title in Modified, while Dean Hastie took out Super Street. In the bike classes, the new champs are Baz Fox in Comp Bike and Colin Johnson in Modified Bike, while in Junior Dragster it’s Sarah Ward who has the ultimate bragging rights.
