WHERE IS IT NOW?

1970 FORD MUSTANG BOSS 302 — BRETT WALKER

-

Brett Walker’s genuine ’70 Mustang Boss 302 was ahead of its time. A pro-touring type of build before pro-touring was a thing, the genuine G-code car was essentially a bare-bones race car that could be driven on the street — the ultimate evolution of the Boss 302. While Brett did race the Mustang in the Northern Muscle Car series, as he’d intended to, the reality was that the car was both too nice and too rare to race. So, when Brett began looking into building a new house in around 2012 and the collection needed downsizing, the Mustang was put up for sale. Still pretty much exactly as Brett built it, the Boss 302 is now owned by Grant Aitken, who has it on display in the Highlands Motorsport Park museum — a great place for a car with so much vintage race pedigree. Now that his house is finished, Brett’s started working on a crazy ’69 Mustang pro-tourer sitting on an Art Morrison Max G chassis, powered by an alloy 427ci Windsor topped with quad Weber IDAs, and backed by an Emco four-speed dogbox and Strange Engineering nine-inch. Sitting on 18x10-inch and 18x12-inch billet wheels, the Mustang has a mean stance and sits amazingly, due to the amount of work put into making it as low as possible while retaining a full 100mm of ground clearance. Because of the scale of the build, and the fact that he is doing almost all the work himself, Brett has decided to start work on a milder ’69 Mustang that he hopes to complete soon. This will enable him to get out and have some fun behind the wheel while he focuses on making the pro-tourer every bit as good as he always intended. It sounds as though Brett’s Boss 302 won’t be the last of his cars to grace the cover of NZV8.
