GARTH WILLIAMS — 1965 CHEV MALIBU

-

It wasn’t just the photo studio shaking when the 572ci big block–powered ’65 Malibu rolled in, but all the buildings in the near vicinity too, such is the depth of its rumble. Driven at the time by Garth Williams — good friend of the vehicle’s true owner, who preferred to keep a low profile, and the man who was lucky enough to get to store the car in his home garage for many years. Fast forward a decade, and it’s still the one car that comes to mind for our editor whenever he’s asked which feature car he’d like to own the most. Prior to being fitted with that monster crate motor, the car had competed in various Targa events, keeping avgas stashed around the country to do so. Even at the time, with its competition days over, the car still ran a half cage, bucket seats, and most importantly, a manual gearbox. Since then, not a lot has changed with it — even the odometer hasn’t changed a huge amount, although the car is now back in the hands of its true owner, who still loves the car every bit as much as he did. Businesses, properties, and racing motorcycles have taken priority over the old Malibu, but we’re sure it’ll be back out and about at some stage, and still, a decade on, will be equally as impressive as it was.
