The chassis is a mix of Nascar and modified. Its main constructi­on is from a 2x3-inch box with a 0.125-inch wall — to save weight, however, the rear clip from the main hoop back is a thinner 0.83 inches. The cage itself is standard Nascar style, although a keen eye will notice that the main hoop is laid back to “triangulat­e the bridge, to give the whole chassis more rigidity”, explains Ray. The front end mimics a Cup car with chromoly A-arms of unequal length and a front-mounted Sweet Manufactur­ing steering rack. The front uprights are fabricated items to hold the wide-five hub, with everything adjustable via slugs. The rear end is very similar to a modern Nascar modified, with long 36-inch radius rods, a Watt’s link, and a central torque arm — a style of rear suspension not often seen in New Zealand racing circles. The whole goal with the rear was to have everything as long as possible to have slow-moving suspension creating, Ray says, a

“happy car, something predictabl­e and very neutral without much over- or understeer”.

From the outset, the plan was clear to not build it to any specific rules. Ray had a long list of events the car would and could be used in: from Pikes Peak, to running big ovals, road racing, and even Rod Millen’s driveway here in New Zealand, which is where we caught up with Ray. This meant that the engine package did not need to follow any rules either. A current
