HMCCQ Pine Rivers Swap, Show and Shine

- Report and photos Gaven Dall’Osto

Frosty conditions but fine days greeted the participants to the annual HMCCQ Pine Rivers Swap, Show and Shine. Thankfully the massive winds experienced on Friday night had abated but I saw many fallen trees on my journey to Samford. I only made it for the Sunday which included the second running of the show and shine. The swap was well patronised particularly on the Saturday. I did get to see a few vendors on Sunday with some interesting bikes either for sale or on display. Ian Stone showed me his newly acquired one-owner 1940s Excelsior which was in exceptional unrestored condition (some guys are just born lucky). I was also attracted to a 1946 Triumph-Werke Nürnberg (TWN ) Triumph which was pretty well intact but needed a full restoration. These German-made Triumphs are pretty rare in Australia and there were many interesting features which stood out from the normal. The sculptured finning on the barrels, the double piston shared combustion chamber arrangement, fully enclosed Bing carbie way down below the barrel with extended tickler. I also met with a seller, Brendan and his wife Dee (thanks Dee for the piece of home baked chockie slice). Brendan had a Walter Wolf Racing fuel tank for sale. I wasn’t up to speed with WWR but Brendan gave me the full story. The tank was left over from a restoration of a RG250 he had undertaken and since sold. His next project was familiar. It was an early ‘50s Triumph Terrier which I had photographed at the Maleny Swap earlier this year. Brendan purchased it as he was attracted to the fact that it was a 4 stroke which is unusual for a baby 150cc engine. This year’s “Show & Shine” saw 24 motorcycles entered and plenty more worthy units out in the car park. Glynn Leitch and his wife Jenny did another sterling job in putting it all together. An area was secured away from the soccer field sprinkler system and nicely painted timber plates were supplied to protect the field and support the motorcycles safely. Again, payment for entry to the swap gave automatic entry to the “Show and Shine”. A few new sponsors were on board this year and Preston (ex BJ’s Bikes & Bits) and HMCCQ member Brian Fleming donated their time to do the judging. Thanks to all for such an enjoyable event.
