Pt Macquarie Show
A splendid sunny autumn day was the perfect backdrop for the turnout of 62 bikes on show and a large crowd of onlookers and enthusiasts in the car park of Settler’s Inn at Port Macquarie. The generational change in what is regarded as a ‘classic’ was well in evidence by the names of the manufacturers of the bikes on show. Well over half the entrants were of Japanese origin which highlights the ever-dwindling prominence of the British machines at similar shows, over what seems like just a decade ago. Amongst them was the Japanese Trophy winner, the 1970 K1 Honda CB750 of Ben Crowe from the field of well presented bikes which included near perfect examples of Katanas, Z900s and even a Rickman Z1000.
Also in attendance was a pair of Honda Postie bikes and another not-so sought after bike, a 1939 B&W Acme. This was the first year of Acme production by Bennett and Wood after the previous year of the same Villiersengined bikes being called the B&W Wasp (125cc) and Hornet(150cc). As is always expected at the Port Show there was another outstandingly meticulous exhibit by Taree Club’s Walter Higgins, with a somewhat customised Ariel Square Four, appropriately named “Whispering Wildfire”, awarded the ‘Publican’s Choice’ trophy. The club would like to thank the staff and management of Settler’s Inn, the support of surrounding clubs and members and the enthusiastic public and the support of the local Media and NBN for its News coverage. The Wauchope Hospital Palliative Care Unit was greatly appreciative of the $1000 cheque presented to them on 2 May being the proceeds of this show.
