OCZ SSD/Modmic

Convert your cans into a gaming set

- PRICE $ 69 modmic.com

I rarely use dedicated gaming headphones when gaming – I much prefer the audio quality offered by high-end cans. But that leaves me with the dilemma of how to speak to my squad buddies. The Modmic solves this in one fell swoop, as it’s a clip-on mic that turns any set of headphones into a set ready to rock with your VOIP solution of choice.

The mounting system is simple. There’s a tiny disk that sticks to either ear cup via regular sticky tape already pre-mounted to the disk. This is actually a small magnet, and the microphone boom then attaches to this. There’s a tooth-system so you can position the boom in just the right spot on the disk, and the boom itself also bends. Two of these disks are included so you can swap the mic between headsets.

The cord is extremely long at 3.3 metres, so you won’t have any issues with it not reaching your microphone input, and it connects via a standard 3.5mm stereo minijack. The cord includes an in-line mute switch for those moments when you don’t want your clan buddies hearing you whispering sweet nothings to your other half. Finally, there’s a small carry pouch that the entire boom and cable fits neatly into.

As for the sound quality? Well, for this price you’d expect the best, and I’m happy to report the Modmic delivers. The omnidirectional microphone captures voice perfectly; it’s one of the clearest I’ve used in fact, to the point where my pals could hear me breathing when things were getting heated (Gross, Bennett – Ed).

It’s not exactly cheap, but this is a very convenient solution for turning your favourite headphones into a set that are game-ready. BENNETT RING
