STEAM TO START CHARGING AUSTRALIAN CUSTOMERS GST IN JULY
Steam will start charging GST for Australian customers soon. This is off the back of new legislation, popularly known as the “Netflix Tax”, that aims to make multinational companies based overseas, but selling in Australia, to pay GST on the things they sell here. Because of this, the price of games via Steam on the Australian store will go up by 10%, starting in July 2017. Nobody thought Steam would just absorb the 10% tax, did they? This is on top of the fact Australians already pay more for titles on Steam compared to our American friends. It’s not all awful news though - you can still get all your cheap games via Steam redemption codes from various online stores like Green Man Gaming, Humble Bundle and Bundle Stars. Those shops don’t charge Australian customers GST. Yet.
