There but for the grace...
One game, two very different experiences
We
really like doing conversational reviews of sufficiently big or impactful games. Getting two or more people to talk about their experiences of a title offers a much wider set of insights into what works - and what doesn’t.
Most of the time, the two reviewers are more or less on the some page, but for this month’s review of Torment: Tides of Numenera, Daniel and I had very different experiences of the vast RPG. Some of that comes down to taste, as you’ll see in the review, but with a game this large, seemingly random decisions can have a massive impact.
In this instance, it was simply down to the order we played certain sections of the game, and what NPCs we talked to. I spoke to a LOT of gameworld’s inhabitants, but somehow managed to not pick up any party-members; unlike Daniel, who seemed to pretty much easily collect the set.
I stand by my thoughts on the game, but it’s an interesting look at how player decision in games of this scale can really skew those vital first thoughts. David Hollingworth Digital Editor
