What do you get when you take a bit of Attack on Titan, a smattering of Shadow of the Colossus, add in a pinch of Assassin’s Creed, sprinkle some Dragon’s Dogma on top, and put them all together? You get something that looks a lot like Extinction, a brandnew IP developed by Iron Galaxy and published by Maximum Games

Humanity in the fantasy world of Extinction is facing a terrifying threat. The kingdoms of this world, which have long warred with each other, became blind to a threat lurking right under their noses. The massive Ravenii ogres and their magical servants have risen, and they crave only for the complete destruction of human civilisations. Only a few specially trained soldiers known as “Sentinels” have the training and expertise required to slay the towering Ravenii, but as the conflict has dragged on, their numbers have been reduced to a mere few. You take control of one of the few remaining Sentinels, Avil, and wage an increasingly futile-seeming war against the Ravenii forces.

We were given the opportunity to get a look at a brief, pre-alpha demo of Extinction, and while it was short, it gave us a taste of the sort of combat we’ll be expecting. Avil is a very nimble character who can perform numerous acrobatic feats, scale structures, even wall-run. As the game progresses, he’ll be able to earn more skills through various gadgets created by his allies. The mobility – as well as the vertical movement – seemed reminiscent of the parkour-style movement seen in other games, though since our demo was of the controlled variety we can’t really comment on the controls themselves.

What we can comment on, however, is the scale of the combat. When the Ravenii armies invade human strongholds, they bring their big guns – and a lot of small, annoying little jerks to back them up. We saw one of the giant ogres waltz into a city, smashing structures with his massive limbs. Even as a powerful Sentinel, it wouldn’t take much more than a few fist-pounds for Avil to be mincemeat.

To combat the brutes, Avil had to make the most of his agility, scaling the monsters to debilitate them and hit their weakpoints. To slay the ogre in our demo, for example, Avil needed to first render it immobile by cutting off its limbs, dismembering the foul being in a delightful spray of blood and rendering it barely able to move. But Ravenii have incredible regenerative powers, so Avil only had a limited time to find the ogre’s weakpoint – a spot in its neck covered by some weak wooden armour. We needed to cut through the armour and kill the giant, all the while being flanked by smaller demons eager to knock Avil down. Finally, with a sword fully empowered with the blood of injured foes, Avil could perform a stylish attack to slay the ogre for good.

Extinction is still a ways off, but from the sliver we’ve seen, it looks like a mix of strategic fighting and fast-paced action. Expect to see more as this game shapes up.
