10 tips For pooch portraits

1 Collars and leads

always check with the owner if their dog is ok off the lead. It’s also worth asking if they want collars off in photos before you start, otherwise you’ll spend hours in photoshop removing them.

2 Clean up

there’s nothing worse than removing dog slobber and drool or eye bogies in photoshop, so save yourself a tedious task by asking the owner to clean their dog’s mouth and wipe over their eyes.

3 Check your background

a beautiful dog is not all it takes to get a good photo, you need to ensure that the background is clear from unsightly objects and distractio­ns.

4 Keep shooting

Don’t be afraid to fire off lots of shots, after all it doesn’t cost anything and practice makes perfect. taking a few extra photos may get you a winning shot!

5 Get your subject’s attention

photograph­ing your own dogs is never easy, so get your partner or a friend to help you. get them to stand behind you near your eye level with a treat or toy so they’re looking in your direction.

6 Make use of natural light

Shooting indoors can be tricky, as often background­s will be distractin­g and there’s simply not enough space or light. go outside, but don’t shoot in direct sunlight as this can be too harsh. Instead, look for shade.

7 Move fast

Dogs are like children and have a limited attention span, so it’s important to make the session fun and keep it moving. Have lots of breaks, but if the dog gets bored, come back to it later.

8 Stay warm and dry

there’s nothing worse than being freezing cold or wet. Wear plenty of layers and take waterproof trousers and coats, especially as you’ll be laying on the ground for the majority of the shoot.

9 Say hello

take the time to spend a few minutes getting to know your doggy subject before you start shooting, and give him or her plenty of attention before you pick up your precious camera gear

10 Be patient

remember, dogs can have good and bad days just like humans, so if things are not going to plan, put your camera away and try another day.
