The green option

A simpler way to change the camera settings that you regularly use

-

Many EOS cameras have a green My Menu tab, but I often find that photographers are not using it, or don’t know how to make the best use of this. My Menu was first seen on the original EOS 7D and, some five years later, the EOS 7D Mark II brought with it a substantial update to the My Menu functionality, and this is now found on a number of other recent cameras, including the EOS 80D.

The idea behind My Menu, in its original form, is that a photographer can pick and choose up to six items that are found within various camera menus and combine them in one custom menu page. For my own photography, with an EOS 5D Mark III, I would include Format Card, Highlight Alert, Speedlite Control, along with the other three being changed to match the kind of photography I happen to be doing at the time. In short I have saved having to navigate to separate red, yellow and blue menu tabs with just those three initial selections.

The selection of six appropriate items can really speed up how you work with the camera. My Menu can be further customized so that every time you press the Menu key on the camera you jump straight to the My Menu screen, where the six items you most probably need access to are located.

With the EOS 7D Mark II, My Menu gained additional capabilities; the option to create up to five My Menu tabs, each with six entries, being just one. Each of these My Menu tabs can be given a title, making it easier to group related items that are important to the photographer and the task at hand. Lastly, the option to always display the My Menu gained an option to only display the configured My Menu tabs Doing this hides all the regular red, purple, blue, yellow and orange tabs. In effect the menu of your camera is totally customized for you.

As an example, I created a menu named ‘Sports/af’ on the 7D Mark II, and added just the settings I need for this kind of photography. These include the AF tuning parameters, the Safety Shift custom function and the custom function for maintaining the correct exposure when a lens is changed to one with a narrower aperture or when a teleconverter is added.
