For local people

In your Winter Wildlife Photography article in issue 123, you say to get started, stay local. The first picture is of a red squirrel, found locally in a small number of forest locations in Scotland, and places like the Lake District. You then show a waxwing, an occasional winter visitor from the continent, known for moving around in small flocks feeding on rowan and hawthorn berries. There are not too many stags around here either, although we do get Bewick’s swans at Slimbridge. You then suggest going further afield for monkeys and polar bears – way beyond most amateurs. I would have liked to have seen more about real local and garden birds. Geoff Poulton Sorry to hear you felt we didn’t feature suitably local nature for your needs. We felt a squirrel was an animal most UK readers could find locally to shoot, although of course the grey is more common. We try and use inspirational images to illustrate key techniques – which you can then apply to nature in your area, rather than simply replicating the shots we’ve shown.
