Technique Assessment
Jakob helps James get set up, ready to shoot the high-speed cars on the track, by selecting the appropriate camera settings
tv mode for Action
“James would normally shoot in Av mode, which is fine when you want the aperture to dictate your exposure, or if you need to control depth of field. But when we’re shooting fast-moving race cars, it’s all about the shutter speed. So I got James to switch to Tv (Time value or Shutter priority) mode so he can control his shutter speed, while his camera sets a suitable aperture for a good exposure. During the track day we used both fast and slow shutter speeds.”
Jpeg for extra Speed
“Shooting in JPEG means
I can take more bursts of cars, to ensure I don’t miss a key moment in a race – plus, using JPEGS massively speeds up our editing and processing, and also takes up less space on memory cards and computer hard drives. Over a Touring Car Championship weekend my team and I can take around 60-70,000 images, and these will all be processed and uploaded for the world’s media to access by Sunday night.”
