Step BY step Turn a Tart into art

Find out the key camera and flash settings, then use Photoshop to create your pop art image

-

01 Canon DSLR SETUP We set up a simple white backdrop, and used a Canon 5D Mark III and 24-70mm standard zoom lens. Shooting at 70mm and close-up, we set an aperture of f/11 for good depth of field for the little tart, shutter speed was 1/160 sec and ISO320.

02 Lighting SETUP We used an off-camera flashgun with a Lastolite softbox positioned from above on a stand, fired remotely by Hähnel Captur radio flash triggers. The flashgun was set to Manual and 1/16 power, and zoom set to 50mm to focus the light.

03 Photoshop it In Photoshop. Use the Quick Selection tool, with Feather 0.1, to select the tart. Go to Filter>filter Gallery and, for a retro look, we choose Artistic>cutout, setting Number of Levels to 5, Edge Simplicity to 3, Edge Fidelity to 1, click OK. Hit Ctrl+c.

04 TART it up Go to File>new, set Width 114mm, Height 103mm and Resolution 300 Pixels/inch. Set Background Contents to Background Colour – set a bright colour, such as pastel blue. Go to Edit>paste and resize the tart with Edit>free Transform, Shift-drag from the corners to retain proportions.

05 Creating ART Go to Layer>flatten image, and Ctrl+a then Ctrl+c. Go to File>new, set Height 228mm, Width 309mm and 300 Pixels/ Inch. Set Background Contents to White. Hit Ctrl+v to paste, and use the Move tool to place it top-left. Shift-alt-drag to duplicate the tart to the space on the right.

06 Finishing Touches To change the colour of the second tart, use Hue/saturation (Ctrl+u), choose the Blue channel and play with Hue and Saturation sliders. To create the next four tarts, repeatedly ‘drag and duplicate’ into the remaining spaces, then adjust the colours until you have six tarts.
