photoshop it! create your composite

combine your shooting and editing skills for an otherworldly final effect

01 move The mirror

Start with the mirror in the bottom-left, then move it along the bottom of the frame. Check the viewfinder to gauge the position. Take a shot in each position using the release, then move backwards, row by row.

02 make a hole

Grab a spade and dig a shallow hole, wide enough to hold our bucket, where we’d like our subject to stand. Place it in the hole and fill with water. Our figure will appear to be stepping into one of the reflected pools.

03 capture reflections

Our subject stays still as we grab more frames of the mirror in various positions in front of him, to capture parts of his reflected body. Save your images to a folder as JPEGS on your PC. Choose one for a base.

04 run The action

Cut and paste the image outside the folder and open it in Photoshop. Drag the supplied load_mirrors action in and go to File> automate> batch. In the settings, find the action, direct it to the folder and hit OK.

05 Piece it Together

The images open, pausing to let you crop before copying and pasting into the base. If your Photoshop version doesn’t support the action, use File>scripts> Load Files Into Stack, or open the images manually.

06 Tweak The Positions

Drag the layer with the person to the top of the stack and hide it. Grab the Move tool. Check Auto-select and Show Transform Controls, then neaten up the positioning of the mirrors. Erase overlapping parts.
