CANON PIXMA pro-100s

Specialising in big glossy prints, it goes large in ink range as well as size

-

£370/$400

Typical of professional-grade A3+ photo printers, the Pro-100s does away with a built-in scanner, memory card slots and LCD screen. The Pro-100s uses dye rather than pigment inks, aiming for exceptionally smooth output on glossy paper.

The Pro-100s is well suited to creating black & white photo prints as well as colour output, with the inclusion of grey and light grey cartridges. These are in addition to the usual six inks of conventional photo printers, bringing the total count to eight inks.

Build quality feels ‘professional’, with a very sturdy chassis and high-grade components. Connectivity is good, with built-in USB 2.0, Ethernet and Wi-fi. Indeed, cloud-based printing compatibility is the main upgrade over the original Pro-100 model, as with the update from the Pro-10 to Pro-10s.

Ink costs are marginally more than the pigment-based A3+ printers on test, but much less expensive than the Epson XP-960 A3 printer, which also has a reduced maximum output size (see the ‘Size Matters’ box below). The greater capacity ink cartridges are also better suited to largeformat printing.

performance

There’s no beating this printer for colour and mono photo printing on glossy, semi-glossy and lustre paper. Tonal range is excellent with superb definition in bright highlights and dark lowlights alike. Colour accuracy is similarly impressive and print speeds are super-quick. Overall, the Pro-100s is a great performer.
