Worldwide walkways

With a bridge as your focal point in a scene, the world is your photographic canvas

-

There’s something about a bridge over water. However, it doesn’t always have to be troubled… Living abroad for many years can have a profound effect on you; it gets in your blood, takes over your life and becomes almost impossible to shake off a sense of adventure.

In this instance, part of my adventure is taking pictures of all the magnificent bridges I encounter on my travels.

The small walkway in front of Seljalandsfoss, Iceland, with the stream it generates plus its rugged backdrop, is a great bridge opportunity for any photographer. The misty sprays it creates can be a challenge at times for your lens, so you need to be patient and bring plenty of cleaning fluids and microfibre cloths!

Rain or shine, overcast or blue skies, London can offer something special. I think overcast is king; playing with the clouds and long exposures, trying to capture something just after civil light is where I’m the happiest. What better subject than the Tower Bridge – it represents everything English, and is a treasure like no other bridge.

I’d like to think the world is too big to never go back to the same place twice, unless of course it’s Venice. Italy holds vast beauty, but Venice is the papà of charming rustic beauty, alleyways, cobbled stones, nooks and crannies, and is home to some 400 bridges. There are of course some that are on the smaller side – tiny, in fact.

Finally, an island that was once home, Bermuda has to be the most beautiful island on earth and home to some stunning caves. The Crystal Caves sit at 62 metres deep and are truly alluring. Stalagmites and stalactites are bounteous, and the mood is quiet, cool and clammy, unlike the humid hot surface.

So, may the journeys never end! Travel is the best education in the world. Just make sure you don’t forget to take your Canon.

Travel is, by far, the best education in the world. Just don’t forget to take your Canon
