We reveal some heavenly food shots in this month’s winning Canon photo gallery
STUNNING IMAGERY FROM THE WORLD OF CANON PHOTOGRAPHY
01 SEVEN DEADLY SINS BY KIM AYRES
Kim’s approach to the theme of ‘Food Glorious Food’ is what makes it stand out as the winner in this month’s comp, as it’s a fantastically creative and well-executed portrait with food being an integral part of the setup. Kim tells us, “I was commissioned to shoot a set of portraits around the theme of seven deadly sins for In House Chocolates in Scotland and this is my favourite image from the shoot”.
Lens Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8l USM Exposure 1/160 sec, f/8, ISO100
02 COLOUR SPLASH BY JACQUI SCOTT (FOTOPHANTASIA)
Combining action with food photography isn’t an easy job, but that’s what Jacqui’s managed to do with her vibrant image of three peppers being dropped into a tank of water. She made sure that all three were dropped at the same in a line so they can all be seen and sit level with each other.
Lens Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II Exposure 1/200 sec, f/7.1, ISO200
03 TOMATO SOUP BY NADIA
Nadia’s photo of tomato soup in a red pot just goes to show that sometimes the simplest compositions work best. She’s chosen to go minimal and it’s paid off – the background is clean and totally black, so there aren’t any distractions and the eye is drawn towards the red pot and lid with the vibrant green basil leaf.
Lens Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Exposure 1/4 sec, f/14, ISO200
04 WRONG BASKET BY PETE BAKER
This is a simple setup but, if you’ll excuse the play on words, it’s berry effective! Pete tells us, “I got the idea in a farm shop where a raspberry had fallen into a blackberry basket. I replicated the composition back home and spent a lot of time perfecting the lighting”. The time Pete took was worth it, as the catchlights on the berry’s give the image depth and texture.
Lens Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Exposure 1/125 sec, f/8, ISO100
05 VEGAN SAUSAGE SANDWICH BY MICHAEL O’MEARA
There’s a lot going on in Michael’s food photo – it really is a feast for the eyes! The central composition works well with the knife handle standing directly up it works almost like a lead-in line, guiding the eye vertically down towards the burger. The background has some interesting textures too and the side light makes the image look extra moody and atmospheric.
Lens Canon EF 100mm f/2.8l Macro IS USM Exposure 1/60 sec, f/3.5, ISO100
06 PREPARATION IS THE KEY INGREDIENT BY NATHAN ANDREW DODSWORTH
Nathan explains, “I created this image in my kitchen using a few household items, an empty can and fresh tomatoes. The tomatoes were suspended against a black background using black thread”.
Lens Tamron 90mm f/2.8 Exposure 1/2 sec, f/11, ISO 100
07 CASTAWAY COFFEE BY JULIA MARTIN
Julia’s shot is full of beans and depth too! The moody black background works well, providing a clean backdrop so the hessian sack and coffee cup get the viewer’s complete attention. The single light source works really well too, creating some gentle catchlights on the beans and highlighting the rim of the cup.
Lens Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8l IS II USM Exposure 1/2 sec, f/25, ISO100
08 AUTUMN SPICE BY SIMON HADLEIGH-SPARKS
Simon’s brought a strong autumnal feel to this food still life setup by shooting with items and ingredients that have a brown, yellow or orange tint and has laid a few leaves around the chopping board too which is a nice touch.
Lens Canon EF 24mm f/1.4l II USM Exposure 3.2 secs, f/16, ISO100
