SWITCHING TO MANUAL
Autofocus isn’t the only way! Manual-focus lenses have advantages
We often want to keep an entire landscape scene as sharp as possible. At medium to long distances, the depth of field stretches about twice as far behind the point of focus as it does in front. So, try to focus on a point that’s about a third of the way into the area of the scene. AF is the preferred option, but manual focusing can work well.
Manual-focus lenses typically have a much larger rotational travel for their focus rings, making precise adjustments easier to apply. With a fixed focal length, you can also download a chart for the hyperfocal distance at all apertures. Line this up on the focus distance scale, and you’ll be able to retain sharpness from the closest distance all the way to infinity.
