How to utilize Picture Styles

EOS cameras use Picture Styles to determine the finished appearance of JPEGS, and the preview of Raws.

Picture Styles first appeared in the EOS 5D and EOS-1D Mark II N in 2004. All EOS cameras since have used Picture Styles to give a specific look to each image. You can download Picture Style Editor (PSE) from Canon’s website.

Using Picture Style Editor You can make your own style, install it in your camera and use it with DPP for processing Raw photos.

Picture Style Editor requires a Raw file from your camera to use as the base to create the style. Images should be correctly exposed, and have a good range of colours and tones, so you can see the effect of your created result. Choose your starting image wisely, and ideally add a colour reference chart to see how your changes affect a range of colours. You need to choose one of the standard styles as your starting point, standard or Fine Detail are good options for balanced colours, or use Netural if you want a flat looking image with the maximum adjustment potential. Follow the workflow with PSE, to adjust the basic image, then go to six axis colour adjustment and finally specific colour adjustment.

Once you have created your own Picture Style it can be installed in one of three user defined styles in your camera using EOS Utility. When shooting JPEG, your images from the camera will use your style, and Raws will have your style included within the file so it can be used with DPP, even if that computer doesn’t have the style on it.
