Canon’s powerful all-rounder EOS DSLR is possibly its best-ever APS-C format camera for enthusiasts…

Launched in August 2019, the EOS 90D is a heavyweight replacement for the trusty old 80D. Packing a ridiculously pixel-dense new 32.5Mp sensor and fast 10fps continuous shooting matching the speedy 7D Mark II, it’s an ideal camera for enthusiasts – and beyond – who demand resolution, speed, and handling.

When you add in the crop factor of the APS-C format, which increases the effective focal length of lenses by 1.6x, it makes the 90D a compelling camera for wildlife and sports shooters looking to get closer to capture the action. We haven’t noticed a huge step up in real-world resolution compared to the 80D, but new notable features include a new joystick controller on the back of the camera, improved battery life (now an amazing 1300 shots) and even a slight weight reduction compared to the 80D.

Performance

We tested the 90D by shooting on a fast indoor go-karting track in very low light, we were still impressed by the body’s ability to crank out frames faster than a 30Mp 5D Mark

IV (and with more resolution, as well). The lighting-fast AF and image output is due in large part to the latest DIGIC 8 processor, a huge step up from the DIGIC 6 in the 80D, which also provides the horsepower for the impressive Eye Detection AF that provides tracking in both stills and video mode.

We’re impressed by the image quality we’ve seen from the 90D’s detail-packed pictures. Yet the key advantages of the 90D lie not with its increased resolution, but its high-speed 10fps shooting and uncropped 4K video capabilities.
