ADAM’S TOP 10 TIPS FOR BETTER CITY PHOTOS
1 Use the histogram
Press the Info button on your Canon camera a few times when reviewing images on the LCD to bring up the Histogram, which shows you a graph of all of your tones and whether the scene is over or underexposed in any areas.
2 Use Photoshop
Don’t be afraid to take multiple images and stitch them together in Photoshop, whether it’s to create an HDR or panoramic image.
3 Play with perspective
Experiment with high and low angles. Adjust your tripod’s leg angles to get closer to the ground for a low angle – or even use a drone for a higher angle.
4 Change lenses
Don’t just stick to your kit lens or wide angle when taking cityscapes; you can get unique results with telephoto optics, a fisheye or even a Lensbaby for city shots that stand out.
5 Practise, practise, practise!
Keep going out shooting and practising with your camera until you know the settings inside out, and can make quick adjustments as the light changes.
6 Arrive early, stay late
Popular tourist hotspots are busy for a reason – they usually have fantastic views! So, get there early to beat the crowds and set up your tripod to claim your spot.
7 Buddy up
Cities can be dangerous places at night, so go with a friend or another photographer to keep you company and also be safe.
8 Snap first before using tripods
Setting up your tripod to take a shot is timeconsuming, so take a quick snap handheld with your camera, or simply on your smartphone, to see whether you can make a composition work.
9 Use blending modes
In Photoshop, try layering up several traffic trail shots that have been taken on a locked-off tripod and change the blending mode to Lighten to build up the traffic trails from each frame.
10 Dress to impress
British weather is notoriously unpredictable, so bring a light jacket even if rain isn’t predicted. A rain cover for your camera is a good idea, too, so you can continue shooting in a downpour.
