SONY SOLD 17.7M PS4S OVER THE LAST FISCAL YEAR. TASTY.

03Sony has shifted a couple of PS4s this year. Actually, it’s shifted a whole heaping bunch of ‘em. The Japanese giant recently released its latest financial briefing, and the headline numbers revolve around its sexily ridged console. In news that must have Sony chief Kaz Hirai dancing around in his pants, Risky Business-style, the firm revealed it sold 17.7 million PS4s during the last fiscal year. Tasty.

Actually, it’s downright delicious. Those sky-high figures are up a hefty amount from the already supremely healthy 14.8m units Sony sold the previous year. With 40m PS4s now in the wild, it’s further proof the machine’s runaway momentum shows no sign of abating. What’s more impressive? That install base was hit before a certain adventurer-cum-system seller swaggered onto the scene.

Historically, those figures only get more enviable. According to old Microsoft financials, the hugely popular Xbox 360 sold a mere 10.8m units by the end of its third fiscal year, with cumulative sales topping out at around 28.5m by the close of 2008. So PS4 is selling faster than one of the most successful consoles of all time, a machine that bloodied PS3’s snoz on shop shelves, lest we forget. As for Xbox One, Microsoft conveniently stopped offering figures for how many units it’s sold as of last October. Hmmm.

That 17.7m wasn’t the only show-stopping number, though. Sony also reported a 50% increase in digital sales on the PlayStation Network, something that helped it post a 329% rise on its year-on-year operating income. You backed the right horsey, gentle reader.

?? ?? Some 17.7m PS4s sold in 2015, huh? For context, that’s roughly the population of Kazakhstan.
