BEST OF THE BEST

What are the shining examples of games going back to the well?

-

REZ INFINITE

PS VR support is the main draw for revisiting Mizuguchi’s surreally excellent rhythm action game. Being fully subsumed in the pulsating environments means that no matter how many times you played the original Rez, this new version still feels stunningly fresh. The addition of Area X, an entirely new level, is also a massive sweetener.

TOMB RAIDER (2013)

By going into full-on survivor mode, Lara became a PlayStation icon all over again. Her origin story is a gory and claustrophobic ordeal, but one that pushed the genre forward with a mix of Uncharted-esque set-pieces and large levels, which you explore rather than trot through. While there is a paucity of actual tombs, the ones you do find are suitably imposing.

GTA V

How could Rockstar manage to turn out a remake of any quality only a year after GTA V hit the PS3? Dramatically improving the visual quality of the game helps, but adding a first-person mode offers a new perspective on your antics. Whether you spent 10 minutes or hours using it, it’s an impressive addition to an already astonishing technical success.

MODERN WARFARE REMASTERED

Modern Warfare’s instant impact on online PlayStation multiplayer cannot be overstated, which is why it’s great that a new generation of gamers have the chance to experience it on PS4. From the tense thrills of the perfectly paced combat to exquisitely tight maps, it’s an important preservation of a classic, and a fantastic lick of polish.

UNCHARTED: THE NATHAN DRAKE COLLECTION

Bundling three of PS3’s best adventures into one package is enough on its own for this to make the list. But with a 60fps upgrade making it slicker than Nate getting out of a body of water, and a photo mode that allows you to indulge your inner David Bailey, this takes three great games and makes them even better.
