PES 2018 kicks off with online co-op

Expect new controls, visuals and online play

-

It’s football game announcement season, and kicking off first is Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 (PES 2018 to its friends). The big news this year is that we’ll be able to play 2v2 and 3v3 co-op matches online, with the option to mix and match online and local players, too.

Other new features include a revamped first touch system Konami is calling ‘REAL Touch +’; players will now react to receiving the ball depending on the height and pace of the pass. It means they will use any part of their body, so long as it’s legal, to trap and control the ball.

It sounds as though there will be a long string of reactive animations on offer, which could point to a slower-paced game. The fact a new close control system is being placed at the heart of this year’s PES, offering contextual shielding to protect the ball, shimmy moves on the stick and a new ‘strategic dribbling system’, points to a more realistically paced game. Which is no bad thing.

PES 2018 will also offer a visual overhaul to accommodate the new close control setup. Real-life players have been motion captured playing football, and everything from shooting and dribbling right down to the walking animations is new this year. Also, kits in PES 2018 have been remodelled to fit different player physiques. Konami says PES 2018 has the most new features of any game in the last 10 years. Even the penalty kick system has been revamped. But with so much changing, what’s the smallest new feature that catches the eye? Why, the new one-player kick off routine, of course.

PLAYERS WILL USE ANY PART OF THEIR BODY TO TRAP THE BALL.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 will release 14 September – best lace up your boots.
