Hey ogre, here’s blood in your eye

There’s a moment in Extinction where your hero, after scaling the body of a 150-foot-tall ogre, makes one last mighty leap and comes slicing down onto the creature’s neck with his oversized swords. An ocean of blood splurts, the gristle and tubes inside the neck are revealed, and the head slides off. Developed by Iron Galaxy Studios, Extinction puts you in the armoured boots of Avil, the last Sentinel, and your skill with a sharp sword is your kingdom’s only defence against these marauding ogres and their army of swarming minions.

Extinction is a goresploitation Shadow Of The Colossus, but unlike Team Ico’s classic after killing a behemoth in Extinction any sadness felt for your departed dead monster evaporates in a plume of blood, and then it’s onto the next one.

Like in Shadow Of The Colossus, each hulking giant will need to be slaughtered tactically, walking puzzles solved with the swish of a blade. You’ll defeat them by spotting weaknesses and slicing off body parts – for example, cut off a foot at the ankle to slow the creature down, enabling you to climb up it’s body for the final finishing move.

EYE, EYE

Combat looks to be very fluid, mixing vertical and horizontal attacks using wall run techniques and a whip to hook-and-pull Avil into the air for more combo kills. As you’d expect, complex attacks and new skills will be unlockable and upgradable, and side-quests will reward those brave enough to meet the challenges.

Central to everything, however, is the promise of a ‘Shadow Of The Colossus meets God Of War’ mash-up. Big unfriendly giants taken down with tactics, skill, and a healthy splurge of the red stuff. A simple premise that, if done well, could get the blood pumping.
