DEAD CELLS
This super-speedy, stylish roguelite won’t leave you at dead last
While obviously borrowing from some extremely punishing titles, Dead Cells promises it isn’t out to get you. Rather than force you to unlock better attacks or equipment as you go, it gives you an awful lot to play with from the start.
From the beginning you have every equipment slot you’ll ever have available to use, the usual double jump, a brutal stomp attack, and – handily – a dodge that renders you invincible for the duration. The developer, Motion Twin, explains that the focus isn’t on working towards bigger, badder gear but on honing your ability to use what you’ve got. The gear doesn’t level up, the player needs to. It makes for a startlingly fast and slick experience, even when you meet an untimely end.
With multiple paths to the end of a run and plenty of weapons to discover, you’re encouraged to play it your way. From chains to spears and even a bit of elemental magic, there are many ways to dispatch your foes. However, even with this, and the ability to skip entire sections that you find will take just a bit more practice to get right, the game still aims to present a challenge for even the most hardened rogueliker through its metagame. You won’t see everything there is to see on your first playthrough as each go around will unlock new levels, weapons, and perks for future runs.
It’s time to get your gear on and study the blade or die trying!
