Hot diggity dog!

Summer is time for PS VR’s hottest properties

-

1 £24.99 FARPOINT

If this shooter were on anything other than PS VR, we’d criticise the linearity or simplicity of its levels. But in VR these factors strengthen the experience and even go some way to warding off motion sickness. Small touches, such as being able to pull the PS VR Aim controller close to your face to stare through the scope, maintain the immersion and create an enjoyable sense of novelty. While the central campaign is short, in the region of five hours, it’s a fun ride and if you’re in the market for all the bells and whistles this shooter makes great use of the Aim controller (though it is also compatible with a DualShock 4).

Set in the cold vacuum of space, I’m not quite sure how it made its way onto this month’s ‘hot’ list, though the story itself is nicely presented through mostly well-acted cutscenes.

2 FREE KITCHEN DEMO (RESIDENT EVIL VII)

While the entirety of Resident Evil VII (£19.99) is playable in PS VR and well worth doing, this free teaser will really light a fire under you. Short and sweet, Kitchen turns up the heat by making the most of the player’s seated position and restricted range of interactions with the world around them. It’s the perfect appetiser to the full, frightening game, which we also highly recommend in VR.

The jury is still out on exactly what’s cooking in the oven in the background but, truthfully, we’re not sure we want to know. What we are sure of, however, is that we refuse to spoil it any more than that; this one is well worth sampling for yourself if you’re still on the fence about sinking your teeth into Resident Evil VII or PS VR. Though be warned that, even though this is a brief demo, a little pot is soon hot…

3 £19.99 SUPERHOT VR

This bullet-time badassery fantasy made manifest in virtual reality continues to be one of the strongest offerings on PS VR. While gun slinging is great fun, we also appreciate the additional ninja star flinging, bottle bashing, and knife tossing too. The ability to deflect bullets WITH YOUR OWN GUNS never gets old either.

While excellent with only a DualShock controller (that game also costs £19.99, and is sold separately to the VR version), in PS VR the motion tracking of your own real-world movements puts the heat on and takes this 3D bullet hell to the next level. The stripped-back, slick visuals are undampened by the headset’s lower resolution, though the use of shades of white makes everything feel rather chilly. What we’re saying is, we’re none the wiser what the word ‘Superhot’ actually means...
