Behold the Death Stranding special edition console

From 8 November, the mysteries of Death Stranding may finally be explained. Or, more likely, we’ll find ourselves all tangled up in the first knots of the ‘strand’ genre. But there’s one thing we are certain of: we’d love to take a delivery of this suitably themed 1TB PlayStation 4 Pro console and DualShock 4 controller, announced to celebrate the game’s anticipated launch.

Ahead of the winter release date, the console sports chilly, glacier-white panels with the textbook oily handprints of a Beached Thing smeared over the top. It’s a striking design – notice the way the world’s continents are folded into the BT’s palm impressions? You’ll be able to pick up the console as part of a special edition bundle that includes the game as well as a DualShock 4 controller that takes things in a decidedly different direction visually.

The DualShock 4 is made from clear plastic in an amber hue that takes its cues from the Bridge Babies’ fluid-filled pods ( not Reedus’ mushroom fertiliser). Thankfully, there’s no liquid sloshing around in there but we can’t help feeling we’ll have the urge to wash our hands after handling this oddly coloured controller. The thinking behind this design choice could be that, as you’ll need to rock your Bridge Baby from time to time, it makes sense for your DualShock to look a little like your constant companion so you won’t feel too silly as you cradle your controller. Watch this space for our review of the game when it’s released.

THE AMBER HUE IS TAKEN FROM THE BRIDGE BABIES’ PODS.
