Mimeo Prophecy recalls classic top-down RPGs

-

Modern Warfare’s new Battle Pass approach offeris free DLC for all. Coming up are remade versions of COD4’s Crash, Shipment, and Vacant maps.

Nine months have passed since Dreams released in early access and creators are now beginning to be more ambitious with their projects. Sebastian Schmitt has dug into his love of ’90s top-down RPGs to create Mimeo Prophecy, which is The Goonies meets ’90s RPG Secret Of Evermore.

“I wanted to create that old-school feeling but give it a modern touch and tell my own story of a failed experiment,” says Schmitt, who spent four months making the first chapter. “Turbo, the dog, was a very late addition and was planned for a later time when I would update Chapter One. But luckily he made it in. My girlfriend, who created him, insisted on it.”

We’re glad she did, as being able to pet Turbo (who looks like a cute dark shiba inu) at the tap of a button adds a sense of connection that really benefits the game. “I also like the idea of having a pet by your side and there are hardly any games with that,” adds Schmitt.

Schmitt says he had a lot of help from other Dreams users, and is giving back.

DREAM TOGETHER

“I’m totally open to sharing my elements. That’s what Dreams is all about and my game wouldn’t be as finished as it currently is without the community,” says Schmitt. “When I couldn’t find a stroller to be placed in the city, I made one myself and released it. It has found its way into some creepy creations since then. I love seeing my creations in other people’s work. I also made a simple levellingup logic and shared it when I couldn’t find any.”

Dreams is helping gamers like Schmitt realise their, erm, dreams. The future looks interesting too, as Media Molecule recently revealed an ambition to license Dreams as a development platform, so people can sell the games they make in it.

Schmitt says, “I never thought this would actually be a thing but I think it’s huge and could create whole careers for people who might have never really thought about working in the gaming industry, like me.”

I WANTED TO CREATE THAT OLD-SCHOOL FEELING BUT GIVE IT A MODERN TOUCH.
