QUANTUM ERROR
Doom meets Control in this only-on-PlayStation horror shooter
”Our goal for Quantum Error is 60fps even on the PS4, and with the specs of the PS5 we believe it is achievable with pushing it to hit 4K with that framerate,” says president of TeamKill Media Micah Jones as he excitedly reveals the company’s ambition for cross-gen shooter Quantum Error.
The trailer for the PS5-bound game reveals a horror shooter that feels like Doom meets Control. Set in 2109, at a time when the world has rallied behind the United Nations Of America, all is not peaceful. Our lives are governed by corporations, and climate change has shifted power – San Francisco, the game’s setting, is now an icy coastal region and home to Monad Quantum Research Facility. Monad is the creator of a global OS that is integrated into every human’s nervous system, turning the population into drones.
Monad Quantum is a big deal, so when it comes under attack firefighters Jacob Thomas and Shane Costa are sent in to rescue the survivors – but as your own team begins to act oddly, all hell breaks loose.
“The journey will reveal nefarious plans to transcend dimensions and communicate with mysterious beings that dwell deep in the cosmos,” says Jones.
While the trailer looks like a setup for a zombie outbreak, Jones reveals these aren’t undead brain-eaters. “As far as what people may refer to as zombies are not true zombies. We have one set that are people neurally controlled against their will, like a hive mind, similar to a queen bee and worker bees. Another set, like seen in our teaser, are actually humans who have been digested by a large entity,” reveals the dev.
GAMING BROS
The studio was co-founded by Jones and his three brothers, and they’re keen to dig into what PS5 can do to ensure Quantum Error’s brand of survival horror shocks.
“Ray tracing is very exciting because it allows our artistic creativity and skill to be amplified at a completely different level with lighting,” says Jones when
A HORROR SHOOTER THAT FEELS LIKE DOOM MEETS CONTROL.
discussing the much-talked-about tech. “It gives the ability to create realistic lighting and shadows in ways that were previously only available in film.”
3D audio is a certainty for a horror shooter, too. “Oh yeah! The fact of being able to make audio that is like real life – sounds reverberated in enclosed areas, sound coming from behind walls, below floors, above ceilings – is going to be such an immersive experience,” he says.
Jones couldn’t get more excited when we chat about the tech talk from PS5 architect Mark Cerny. “We feel the man is an absolute genius! It felt like the system is designed with developers in mind. We are really excited about the Zen2 CPU, which will make things possible on PS5 that were not on PS4.”
Jones explains how PS5 will enable more destructible objects, physically simulated objects, more AI, and higher framerates. “Also the Tempest audio engine explanation made us squeal like little excited kids! The HRTF and sound experience that we will be able to create for our players is truly groundbreaking with the PS5.”
PS5 FIRST
Quantum Error will be Teamkill Media’s second game, the studio having cut its teeth on PS4’s first-person dark fantasy Kings Of Lorn – The Fall Of Ebris. The shared systems of PS4 and PS5 make
Jones feel confident Quantum Error’s development will go more smoothly than the first game’s.
“We fully expect we can achieve an early PS5 launch. However, we dream and pray we could release as a PS5 launch title, and believe if you set your mind to something and work hard you can achieve anything.”
Jones reveals to us that, at the time of our interview, horrorshooter Quantum Error is only in development for PS4 and PS5. “Our focus is on PS5 first and then to optimise for PS4. We are open to a timed exclusive or full exclusive.”
