TOTALLY RELIABLE DELIVERY SERVICE
An express delivery of fun?
Videogames lend themselves well to comedy. Whether it’s a quirk in the AI causing NPCs to act like being on fire is just another Tuesday night or the physics system forgetting itself and unexpectedly flinging you across the map, games are known for their accidental absurdist punchlines. However, purposefully making a comedy game – now that’s a tricky task.
As you’re the titular courier company’s wobbly-limbed newest recruit, hilarity occasionally ensues. The wide-open world is unpredictable and even something as small as a stray manhole cover can muck up your delivery run. The ragdoll physics are almost wholly unpredictable, making getting *blorp!* done alone extremely frustrating. 1
However, getting the team together for a round of deliveries will cure any grumpiness – it did the trick for us. The magic is undeniably in the multiplayer. Invite the chums who can bring pure chaotic energy to your online session and watch them display the game world’s many slapstick opportunities. 2 Unfortunately, even the multiplayer’s charms quickly wear thin.
The large open world is filled with props, vehicles, and hazards. While they add variety, the game suffers from a lack of structure. You can attempt deliveries together or solo in any order but there’s generally not enough here to consistently make your own fun (which the game is too reliant on). As sandboxes go, Team OPM did enjoy plenty of hijinks – including one memorable caper where Ian trapped Oscar on a ferris wheel, swiftly followed by
Oscar’s revenge. Unfortunately, all too quickly we found we’d had our fill. Jess Kinghorn
