How the DualSense is exciting the team for PS5

I love the two-tone white look and can’t wait to see how this grows with new editions. The inclusion of Haptic feedback, the Create button, advanced mic and speaker, and new touchpad speak to the console gamer in me. There’s a reason I love gaming on PS4 over a PC; it’s the culture of how we play. A new controller designed specifically for a new PlayStation can affect how we experience games as much as new graphics cards and the race for teraflop bragging rights. DualSense is the new watermark in pad design.

It’s fantastic that it looks like Sony is moving away from a plain black box as a launch console. We’ve seen some great special-edition PS4s over the years, and the Glacier White PS4 Pro with matching controller was a thing of beauty. The DualSense has a similar fresh appeal, but clear buttons help create an even more streamlined look, while that strip of blue light around the touchpad is eyecatching without being tacky. Forget hiding your PS5 away under your telly; if the DualSense is any guide it’s going to be well worth showing off.

I’m really pleased that all DualSense’s buttons are in familiar places. It’ll make playing my favourite PS4 games on PS5 all the more enjoyable. I am intrigued by the introduction of the Create button. I love sharing the occasional screenshot on Twitter (“Hey, look at this splatty blob I made in Dreams!”), and if DualSense and PS5 together make sharing even easier, it’ll spur me on to make more and share more. And hopefully we’ll be able to watch more PlayStation exclusives being streamed on a variety of platforms too.

The DualSense ticks all my boxes. I always love a fab-looking controller, and it’s great to get something interesting with a launch console, rather than just a ‘basic’ design. But most exciting are the immersive features. It’s important to me that these don’t end up feeling like gimmicks. They need to be subtle enough to fade into the background, but also add enough that I’m making use of them without having to think about it. Smartly, this seems to be the DualSense’s MO – an allin-one package delivering truly next-gen immersion right out of the box.

I can definitely get behind doing something different. However, the default black of PlayStation 4 hides scuffs and fingerprints better than white ever will. Practical concerns aside, white is quite the statement. Sure to stand out among all of the black boxes currently dominating living rooms, there may be less chance of losing PlayStation 5 peripherals if white is the default colour. Personally, I’m hoping for some more colourways to be announced. Is it really too much to ask for a decent pink or purple paint job for my gaming gear?
