This PS VR release has as many Game Of The Year awards on Oculus as it has helping hands. Developers including Ninja Theory, Epic Games, and ClutchPlay lined up to help Lucasfilm, and Hollywood writer David S Goyer joined the party too. The result has been one of the most memorable Star Wars games not to appear on PlayStation – until now.
Simply being in a virtual space face-to-face with Darth Vader is worth investing in a headset for, and the fact you can swish a lightsaber about too only makes it more fun.
Telling a canonical Star Wars story inside PS VR, Vader Immortal: A Star Wars Series is an ambitious release. As a Force-sensitive smuggler, Darth Vader enlists your help in his search for a way to resurrect his wife Padmé, who died giving birth to their twins Luke and Leia.
Set on the planet Mustafar, between the events of Revenge Of The Sith, when Anakin turned fully to the dark side, and A New Hope, you must explore Darth Vader’s lava-moated fortress for an ancient Sith relic called the Bright Star, which can aid the Sith Lord’s resurrection plan.
While the story is engaging and underpins the momentum from one action sequence to the next, it’s the act of using the Force in a virtual world that never fails to excite.
MUSTAFAR BE GOOD
Though movement is done by ‘teleporting’ to areas to prevent VR sickness, combat is flexible and imaginative. Eventually you’ll learn all the Force powers needed to deflect stormtroopers’ laser fire, Force-push enemies off ledges, and Force-pull a befuddled foe’s blaster from their hand and turn it on them.
If after all that you fear Vader Immortal is just a three-hour rollercoaster where cinematic spectacle trumps gameplay, then you’ll want to play Lightsaber Dojo. These wavebased rooms enable you to let loose with your lightsaber skills (unlocking famous Sith and Jedi weapons from the films) inside PS VR and ultimately that’s what you’re here for.
