I WANT TO SEE A VIDEOGAME BASED ON A SUPERHERO THAT IS NOT DC OR MARVEL.

It’s time to give Marvel and DC superheroes a little break and usher in new faces

- Laura Francis

Ahh, it’s a no-brainer that videogames based on comic book properties have been around since the early Atari days. Recently, though, they’ve had something of a renaissance, particularly over the past decade when it comes to Marvel and DC, with the Batman Arkham series, Marvel’s Spider-Man and the upcoming Avengers game from Square Enix – and rumours of a new Batman game are constantly swirling.

But sometimes it’s best to forgo the obvious. There are many comic book properties which are not Marvel or DC, which have the potential to form the basis for very exciting videogames. It has happened before – take the extremely successful The Walking Dead from Telltale Games, which is based on the popular comic book from Skybound Entertainment. There have also been videogames based on Hellboy, though those were tied into movies rather than directly to the comics, but you get my point. What I’m saying is that there is scope for a lot of exciting gameplay mechanics and unique and compelling stories, not panel-for-shot recreations from the pages of the comics or just simple movie tie-ins.

SPAWN STARS

Recently, Mortal Kombat 11 released its DLC, and among its lineup is Spawn, who you may recognise as an Image Comics character, created by Todd MacFarlane. But can you imagine how awesome it could be if Spawn fronted a game for the first time since the early noughties? There’s plenty of untapped potential there. Spawn has had games before, but they’ve received very lukewarm reactions for the most part.

Having recently read the latest Witchblade (2017) comic reboot from Image Top Cow and really enjoyed it, I would absolutely love to see this property make the leap to the console. A game was said to be in development some time ago but never really seemed to get off the ground. Think lots of action, fun gameplay directions, and a fantastic story, just as the characters deserve…

It’d be an uphill battle with lesser-known comic properties as videogame companies tend to want huge awareness of the brand. But here’s hoping…
