DEV ILLFONIC REVIEW #176, 7/10

After over four weeks out in the wilds there’s sadly little change to Illfonic’s asymmetrical shooter. The big problem remains: you’ll be waiting to play as the Predator like a film-fan sweating it out for a decent sequel to this classic ’80s sci-fi series.

If anything, things have gone backwards. It’ll take over six minutes to be matched as the alien hunter – and yet the fan-fantasy of prowling the jungle as the iconic creature making use of its unique tech and elegant weapons is probably the reason you bought into Predator: Hunting Grounds.

What’s worse is the game teases you with upgrades and unlockables, shaders and weapons for the Predator even when you’re not playing the monster.

The levelling system delivers rewards for the spec ops fireteam and the Predator alike. Eventually you’ll have 70-plus Predator unlocks waiting to be played with, though you may well never see or use them.

STICK AROUND?

It’s far easier to get a game as one of the fireteam. Here you’re dropped into the jungle with randomised objectives to complete, most involving running to an enemy camp to steal documents, search facilities, or even assassinate leaders.

Missions can be multipart, ensuring you gradually put yourself on the Predator’s radar as your gunfire heats up the jungle, catching its thermo-vision. It’s a neat grind that can offer

TEASES YOU WITH UPGRADES AND WEAPONS FOR THE PREDATOR.
