WATCH DOGS: LEGION
Castillo’s grip on power will become. Playing as either a male or female version of the character, you pick up a gun and fight for your freedom. Ubisoft is promising a cast of factions and rebels to aid you every bit as weird and wonderful as the ones you met in Far Cry 5.
Interestingly, this will be the first Far Cry to show your character on screen during cinematics and some gameplay settings, though the shooting remains in first-person. What this offers is more incentive to buy one of the many downloads that it seems will drop once the game releases on 18 February next year. These include colonial explorer and crocodile hunter outfits, and our favourite, the Vice Pack, a crisp white suit Don Johnson would be proud of wearing. Each DLC comes with a unique vehicle skin and an animal companion. Fangs For Hire are back, now called Amigos. The Vice Pack features a white panther while out of the box it looks like we get a sausage dog called Chorizo (coincidentally, this was the name of OPM Oscar’s D&D character, also a sausage dog. Great minds.)
How Amigos work in the game is not yet confirmed, though Chorizo does sport a basket of ammunition and tools instead of hind legs so we anticipate the little chap will scuttle extra munitions our way during a heavy shootout.
When it comes to guns Far Cry 6 has you covered, and then some. The usual array of machine guns is on offer, but as Yara has been cut off from the world for decades the rebels need to get creative.
Made from anything that comes to hand, special weapons feel makeshift. A flamethrower called the Tostador is powered by the engine from a leaf blower, a fuel pump’s handle and nozzle forms its grip and trigger, and a camping stove’s fuel tank provides the ammo. Equally makery is the Discos Locos – the deadly disc launcher – that fires music CDs with bloody accuracy.
VALHALLA AWAITS
Swapping sun for sodden mud, Ubisoft revealed Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s unique brand of killing tools. In-game combat in Ubisoft’s Viking fantasy is brutal and feels closer and more personal than previous games. Using a variety of swords, hammers, axes, and a spiked flail Eivor goes to work on her enemies, cutting, stabbing, and breaking bones. A close-up kill-cam goes full Mortal
THIS WILL BE THE FIRST FAR CRY TO SHOW YOUR CHARACTER ON SCREEN DURING CINEMATICS.
Kombat to wallow in the gore. It’s brutal but perhaps too familiar, and lacks the skilful fluidity of the recent Ghost Of Tsushima.
This game is a broader roleplay, however, and we see how Valhalla manages to mix in its myths with its murder. ‘Odin vision’ enables you to see collectibles, animal tracks, and enemies, while later a boss battle while high on drugs affords the game a little fantasy.
LEGION UPDATED
The team behind Watch Dogs Legion has spent the months since the game’s delay adding new melee combat and Far Cry 6-like improvised weapons to its ‘be anyone simulator’. If you recruit and play as a construction worker he’ll be able to take on Albion guards with a wrench or nail gun, and call on a cargo drone for help.
The extra time has also been spent developing the game’s Borough Uprising system. Completing challenges in a Borough unlocks a large-scale custom mission to inspire the population to rise up and retake that region.
Will you be taking up the rebel cause, either in Watch Dogs Legion or Far Cry 6? Both will have free
PS5 upgrades, if you buy digitally.
