The original trilogy is getting its long-awaited sequel

-

Has it really been more than two decades since Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped first released? The recent N.Sane Trilogy made 1998 feel just like yesterday but you won’t need to keep looking back in time for your furry orange fix – turn your eyes to the future, because Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time has been announced. You won’t have to wait too long to play it, either: Crash will return in his fourth mainline game this October.

The original trilogy’s three baddies (Dr Neo Cortex, Dr N Tropy, and Uka Uka) have broken out of their prison, a cage created when the Time

Twisting Machine imploded at the end of Warped. Their escape rips along the seams of space-time, exposing the raw edges of the multiverse. Before the evil trio can make the most of this very bad, no good situation, Crash, Coco, and the four Quantum Masks must band together to stop them. What follows is all the classic precision platforming you know and love, given a timeywimey twist.

Mucking about with time, you’ll be able to freeze falling platforms in place and stay the chomping jaws of less-thanfriendly critters. On top of that, the Quantum Masks will be able to offer a helping hand by bestowing special abilities – and, by the looks of it, some jaunty-looking power suits too.

Speaking of sweet threads, buying digitally will also net you the Totally Tubular skin set. (Did crop tops ever really go out of style?) Moving on from questionable fashion choices to ‘Hey, where’d you get those?’, the announcement trailer also shows Crash grinding on foot along rails, sans skateboard. Just what are his soles made of?

You’ll be able to switch between Crash and Coco at any time, and there’ll be offline multiplayer for up to four players. Exactly who will be riding alongside the Bandicoot siblings remains to be seen, but there are lots of new faces alongside the familiar ones.

BOB A JOB

Developed by Toys For Bob, the studio behind both the Spyro and Crash Bandicoot remasters, we feel satisfied that this followup is in the

best possible hands. While clearly respectful of the series’ history, the devs aren’t afraid to put their own stamp on Crash, with new worlds to hop, skip, and jump through. So far we’ve seen underwater vistas, high-tech highways, and deep forested areas. Oh, and it wouldn’t be a Crash game without at least one great big stompy dino chasing you down, right? Shame no-one told them the floor was lava…

We’ve even had our first glimpse of Toys For Bob’s reimagining of everyone’s favourite orange marsupial. It’s not the biggest departure but it definitely brings the classic design up to date. And on 2 October, we’ll see what other twists Toys For Bob introduces to the beloved Crash formula.
