PLAY AT YOUR PACE

If you believe firmly in the mantra ‘life is short; play games on easy,’ you can set your PS5 to automatically select the easiest difficulty setting available for every new title you load up. Conversely if you relish a challenge, you can set it to pick the hardest setting – or anything in between – under Saved Data And Game/App Settings.

PS5, WI-FI 6

PS4’s drawn-out download speeds are often grumbled about, and Sony’s answer to this common gripe has been to fit the new console with a Wi-Fi 6 antenna. Wi-Fi 6 allows your hard-working internet router to manage the data demands of multiple devices far more efficiently. It’s a futureproofing step that should deliver much snappier downloads right now.

CREATE YOUR WAY

The Share button’s successor, the Create button, is very slick.

You can still capture screenshots and video clips at the press of a button, but now you can fiddle with the resolution of what you capture.

The easy-access Create sub-menu allows you to flick quickly through your last 15 shots for easier sharing too. Streamers are particularly wellserved by the new video overlay options, though you’ll need a PlayStation Camera to make the most of those.

IN CONTROL

The DualSense might look bigger than a DualShock 4, but it fits more snugly in the hands thanks to revised ergonomics, the grips and triggers angled just right so it fits easily into digits big and small. A built-in mic allows for easy voice chat, and holding the mic button even handily mutes all audio. Tapping the PS button brings up the seamless Control Centre. Add on Create and the DualSense isn’t just about controlling games but the whole PlayStation in one fluid experience.

SENSE-ATIONAL

Remember your delight at first hearing audio cues through the DualShock 4 speaker? It’s the same sensibility tuned to perfection that’s behind DualSense. With haptic feedback that can dance all around the controller rather than vibrate the entire thing, adaptive triggers that can provide a touch of extra feedback, and the higher-definition speaker working in tandem, the feel of walking on, say, glass or sand is incredibly distinct.

MAKING HISTORY

PS5 might be a new generation, but it’s clear as soon as you get your mitts on the machine that it’s a celebration of PlayStation as a whole. Even the classic symbols are sneakily plastered all over the console and controller, part of the texturing on the inside and underside respectively. Pack-in game Astro’s Playroom is almost like an interactive museum of iconic PlayStation moments, where you can view and turn PlayStation accessories from consoles past around in your hand.
