Nacon’s lead product designer Valentin Delrue weighs in on DualSense and designing the perfect controller
OPM: So, as someone who knows controllers, what do you think of the new features on PS5’s DualSense?
Valentin Delure: The DualSense features look amazing. I’m really looking forward to getting hold of the controller to discover all the possibilities it offers in terms of gameplay and immersion. The haptic feedback and adaptive trigger could bring a real benefit to the gamer […] As a designer myself, I also appreciate the work that has been done in terms of shapes and ergonomics. The DualSense is definitely a true next-gen controller!
OPM: As technology advances, does it become harder to make third-party controllers, or more fun?
VD: Contrary to what most players might think, working as a third party is actually very challenging – as well as being super-exciting, since we have the honour of being officially licensed PlayStation partners. That makes our work harder, but also much more valuable and satisfying: not only is it our mission to create an original and innovative approach of the product, but also to meet the high requirement levels of a major industry player.
OPM: There was a time when most third-party controllers were cheaper alternatives to official pads, but these days it feels like third-party alternatives are often many-featured, expensive, premium controllers. Why do you think this is?
VD: I think it’s a good thing for gaming industry image. Gamers want reliable, highquality controllers, because games these days are more high-end. Also, now gamers have achieved professional status, expectations of the controllers as a key piece of equipment are even higher. Which is good!
