Free? It’s your destiny too

Destiny 2 will get a free upgrade and more on PS5

-

Bungie has committed to three major events in Destiny 2, beginning with this month’s Beyond Light, and continuing with next year’s The Witch Queen, concluding with Lightfall in 2022. This now free-to-play shooter that launched shortly after PS4 is here to stay, and will be enhanced on PS5.

The release of Beyond Light signals Bungie’s plans for PS5, with support for 60fps and 4K resolution. As well as being a free upgrade, it will also include all the DLC and content from previous paid expansions. Destiny 2 will also offer crossplay, so PS5 players with friends plugging away on PS4 can still fight together.

Behind the headlinegrabbing increased framerate and resolution are some subtle changes to how the game will run, promising greater immersion. The new console’s SSD is used to drastically reduce load times: it now takes 30 seconds to boost to a new planet rather than over a minute on PS4. On a technical level Bungie is tweaking its game engine to better fit the new free-to-play system, with updates taking 12 hours to be created and offered to players rather than the current 24-hour approach. The game’s file size is smaller, again suggesting it’s tapping into that SSD on PS5, but also due to much of the legacy content being pushed into the

Content Vault. This classic content, including Destiny’s original Strikes and Raids, will be put into rotation; Cosmodrome and Vault Of Glass are the first classics to be rereleased.

What this tells us is that PS5 free upgrades aren’t the preserve of paid-for games, and with a revamped PS5 edition of Fortnite at launch, along with Warframe, and Grand Theft Auto Online coming at the end of 2021, your second life in some of PS4’s biggest live services will be improved on PS5.

“YOUR SECOND LIFE IN SOME OF PS4’S BIGGEST LIVE SERVICES WILL BE IMPROVED ON PS5.”
