We dive into PS4’s library for gold. This month: bullet hell

-

FURI

Twitch-based being Jen Simpkins is mad about the creepy cyberpunk boss battler As anyone can tell from both my game library and my dating history, I’m an enthusiast bulletdodger. An all-bosses, all-bullets PS Plus freebie was a lovely surprise. Less lovely? Its precise, painful, palm-slickening demands. But for every failure, there’s a flicker of euphoria as my dodges sync with the throbbing tunes and another Jailer falls. A stylish, ominous, pulse-challenging play.

ENTER THE GUNGEON

Always keen to avoid a fight, Ian Dean loves dodge-rolling in the Gungeon The Gungeon team loved the dodge roll move so much they named the studio after it. It places survival front and centre. I dodge. I roll. I flip a table and take cover. The screen fills with a maze of glowing shots, but what do I care? I have dodge roll perfected. I get cocky and die. And die again. I realise I’ll never perfect dodge roll. But that’s okay, it’s what makes Gungeon so good.

RESOGUN

Ol’ rubber thumbs Ben Tyrer adores saving the green light men of Resogun Housemarque knows how to create mesmerising waves of particles to dodge through, but it outdoes itself with this PS4 launch title. Along with ships to blast away, there are tiny neon green stick figures to rescue. These chaps add just enough incentive when aiming for the highest of scores that you’ll bellow expletives if you miss even one. The perfect mix of risk and reward.

I GET COCKY AND DIE. AND DIE AGAIN. I REALISE I’LL NEVER PERFECT DODGE ROLL.

?? ?? This may look like a crowded and busy screen, but it’s really just a breather before the game kicks up a gear into overdrive.
