TR ANSFERENCE
VR chiller wants to hack your head Format PS VR ETA Early 2018 Pub Ubisoft Dev Spectrevision
Part film/part game horror experience, and fronted by a Hobbit… who said VR was a gimmick? We jest… kinda. If nothing else, this collaboration between Ubisoft and Elijah Wood’s production company Spectrevision certainly looks different. Mixing gameplay and scratchy FMV footage (that looks to have been ripped straight off a VHS tape) there’s no denying Transference has a vibe all of its own.
Recent titles like PC/iPad indie Her Story have shown interactive narratives built around FMV can work a treat, providing the performances of the actors are up to scratch. With uninspiring shovelware quickly piling up on PS VR, there’s certainly room for fresh experiences.
Whether Transference will be enough of an actual game to hold your interest for any amount of time remains to be seen, of course. But the central premise of neurocientists uploading brain data to remotely hack memories and emotions certainly sounds ripe for some subversive scares. With so many games now coming to PS VR, a title as genre-defying as Transference could help craft something uniquely ‘virtual’.
