RED DEAD REDEMPTION 2

Open-world outlaw aims to be the best in the West

Rockstar does two things incredibly well. First, it makes sandbox crime classics that are nearly always stupendous. And second… well, the coolest developer on the planet has a nasty habit of delaying said stupendous open-world affairs. Sadly, Red Dead Redemption 2 continues this trend.

Originally scheduled to hit PS4 this September, Rockstar has decided to delay the upcoming Wild West sandbox until next spring, stating “extra time is necessary to ensure that we can deliver the best experience possible for our fans”. The studio’s parent company, TakeTwo, also weighed in on the setback, with CEO Strauss Zelnick stressing during an investor call that the delay was merely down to Rockstar wanting to “deliver the most extraordinary [experience] we’re capable of providing.” Seeing as both GTA IV and V were pushed back late in the day, the news should hardly come as a surprise.

QUICK DRAW

At least the latest Red Dead screens drop a few more hints on what to expect from the epic Old West adventure. The new shots show off mighty oaks in the forests and sprawling, sun-kissed prairies, while it looks like your playable outlaw(s?) can now dual-wield two different types of firearm at once.

Unlike John Marston’s mournful farewell to the dying West, which featured early automobiles chugging around the town of Blackwater, there’s been no sign of old timey cars in RDR2 yet, suggesting this sequel is in fact a prequel to 2010’s melancholy masterpiece. Either way, Redemption 2 will no doubt be a stone-cold, six-shooting classic.
